Overhoeks, named after the Shell tower, will become an inspiring meeting place for students and families, young and old, residents and day-trippers, creative persons and business people. Shell will remain present in a major world-class research centre: the New Technology Centre.
A total of 2,200 homes will be built; luxury owner-occupier and rented properties as well as 20% social housing, beginning in 2009, and completed around 2016. Architecture will range from unique high-rise buildings with bustling streets and squares, to tranquil residential areas with peaceful green courtyards.
The residential quarter will contain designs from international top architects, forming a stately urban district with buildings named after historical Dutch ships like the Prinsendam and the Oranje. The Overhoeks Tower will remain a beacon on the IJ, housing businesses and catering establishments. The destination of The Groot Lab - a classic example of Dutch industrial heritage – is still not certain. It may become a hotel with catering and working functions. Unlike the built up eastern harbour area Oostelijk Havengebied , or the busy city centre, Overhoeks will have lots of green areas. The IJ city park will contain the new Filmmuseum, with 60 million metres of film archive.
