The crane, the ramps, the Kraanspoor, the old and partly renovated halls: the NDSM dockyard recalls days gone by. History is a great inspiration for development at this former dockyard.

After years of disuse, the NDSM dockyard is transforming into Amsterdam’s largest hot area and the ultimate festival venue. Underground festivals such as Robodock and Over het IJ have chosen this location. The Scheepsbouwloods building has been converted into studios and a skate park. Spectacularly renovated buildings house major media companies like MTV, which occupies the old carpentry workshop. There are even people living there, in sea containers that have been converted into temporary student accommodation.
The precise future of this area has not yet been determined. For now, the plans focus on development over the next 15 years. The motto is "Mixed to the Max": a mix of functions exploiting the area’s rugged character . The creative sector takes centre stage and water continues to play a key role. All valuable buildings, maritime elements and objects will be given a new, spacious place. Such as the old Kraanspoor track which serves as foundation for the award-winning glass office complex, home to television production company IdtV among others. Or the old Baanderij with offices and the IJ-kantine restaurant. The Smederij, or old forge is to be a lively centre with businesses, a restaurant and a sky bar overlooking the IJ.
