Amsterdam-Noord is to get a new urban centre: Centrum Amsterdam Noord, covering the area between Nieuwe Purmerweg, the A10 ring road, and between Olof Palmeplein and the Noordhollandsch Canal. Construction of the centre started in 2007 at a number of sites in the area.

Centrum Amsterdam Noord contains three sub-areas:
Renovation of Boven ‘t Y: the existing and successful Boven ’t Y shopping centre will be expanded in three phases and transformed into a lively shopping, residential and leisure area, with new shops and leisure facilities including a theatre, cinema and large public library, as well as housing and car parking.

The Elzenhagen residential area is made up of Elzenhagen Noord and Elzenhagen Zuid. A new neighbourhood will be built in this area, with a mix of apartments and houses with gardens, as well as a primary school.

The Stationsgebied is located around the new terminus of the Noord/Zuid metro line and the regional bus station. New construction in this area is to include housing, offices, and cultural and educational facilities such as the ROC (regional training centre) and Brederocollege.

A total of more than 3,000 new residences will be built in Centrum Amsterdam Noord. These will vary from town houses in the area of the shopping centre to country-style houses near the Noordhollandsch Canal. The new Noord/Zuid metro line and bus station ensure that access to the area is very good.
