Buiksloterham (BSH) has a powerful and staunch feel to it. The first new businesses were attracted by the area’s ruggedness and the sense of space and freedom.

In recent years the BSH industrial estate has been changing into a mixed living-working area. Rather than a detailed urban development plan, the choice was made to implement a gradual transformation over some 25 years. This attracts businesses that are keen to be based in an area still under development, where there is still scope for opportunities and own initiatives.

The new businesses continue to build on the old constructions, renovating old buildings and turning them into serviced offices, like the Groene Draeck, a former yacht-building facility. New buildings such as the Kaap Noord complex and the industrial properties on Asterweg are built and Boomerang Casa, a serviced office complex with units from 60 - 150 m2 for creative businesses.

BSH will soon also house the new collection building of the museum of cinematography, or Filmmuseum planned in Overhoeks. Housing is new to this area.  It will become possible with the new zoning plan, possibly in 2010 with around 2,000 homes being built until 2015. Sustainability is paramount at BSH. Sustainable enterprises include the new Shell lab and the New Energy Docks foundation. The construction of a new road, Ridderspoorweg, from Klaprozenweg to Asterweg should make the area readily accessible in 2009.
